Other Bursitis of Hip: Causes, Symptoms, and Treatment

When we think of hip bursitis, we often think of trochanteric bursitis, which is the inflammation of the bursa located near the greater trochanter of the femur. However, there are other bursae located in the hip region that can also become inflamed, causing pain and discomfort. Here is what you need to know about other bursitis of the hip:

  1. Ischial bursitis: Ischial bursitis is the inflammation of the bursa located between the hamstring muscles and the ischial tuberosity (the bone you sit on). This type of bursitis can be caused by prolonged sitting, especially on hard surfaces, or by activities that involve repetitive bending of the hip, such as running or cycling.
  2. Iliopsoas bursitis: The iliopsoas bursa is located on the inside of the hip joint, and inflammation of this bursa can cause pain in the groin or front of the hip. Iliopsoas bursitis can be caused by injury, overuse, or arthritis.
  3. Gluteus medius bursitis: The gluteus medius muscle is located on the side of the hip, and the bursa located underneath it can become inflamed, causing pain on the outside of the hip. This type of bursitis is often caused by activities that involve repetitive side-to-side movements, such as dancing or soccer.

Symptoms of other bursitis of the hip can include pain, tenderness, and swelling in the affected area. It may be difficult to move the hip joint, and there may be pain when pressure is applied to the affected bursa. If you experience any of these symptoms, it is important to see a healthcare professional for an accurate diagnosis.

Treatment for other bursitis of the hip may include rest, ice, compression, and elevation (RICE), as well as anti-inflammatory medications and physical therapy. In some cases, corticosteroid injections may be recommended to reduce inflammation and pain. Surgery is rarely necessary for other bursitis of the hip.

If you think you may be experiencing symptoms of other bursitis of the hip, don't ignore them. Seek medical attention to get an accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment.
