Other Disorders of Autonomic Nervous System

The autonomic nervous system (ANS) controls our body’s involuntary functions, such as heart rate, blood pressure, breathing, and digestion. When the functioning of this system is disrupted, it can lead to various disorders. Here are some of the other disorders of the autonomic nervous system:

  1. Multiple System Atrophy (MSA)
  2. MSA is a rare and progressive disorder that affects the ANS. The symptoms include difficulty with movement, balance, blood pressure regulation, and bladder control. There are two types of MSA: MSA-P, which affects movement, and MSA-C, which affects coordination.

  3. Pure Autonomic Failure (PAF)
  4. PAF is a disorder in which the ANS fails to function properly. This leads to symptoms such as low blood pressure, dizziness, and fainting. These symptoms can happen when a person stands up after sitting or lying down, and can also occur during exercise or after eating.

  5. Autoimmune Autonomic Ganglionopathy (AAG)
  6. AAG is an autoimmune disorder that affects the ANS. The immune system mistakenly attacks the autonomic ganglia, which are clusters of nerve cells that control the ANS. This leads to symptoms such as low blood pressure, rapid heart rate, and digestive problems.

  7. Familial Dysautonomia (FD)
  8. FD is a genetic disorder that affects the ANS. The symptoms include poor balance and coordination, difficulty swallowing, and problems with blood pressure and heart rate regulation.

  9. Baroreflex Failure
  10. Baroreflex failure is a disorder in which the ANS is unable to regulate blood pressure properly. This can lead to symptoms such as high blood pressure, headaches, and heart palpitations.

Other disorders of the ANS include postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS), neurocardiogenic syncope (NCS), and Horner’s syndrome. These disorders can be diagnosed through various tests, including tilt-table testing, autonomic reflex testing, and sweat testing.

Although there is no cure for most of these disorders, treatments are available to manage the symptoms. These can include medications, lifestyle changes, and physical therapy. It is important to seek medical care if you experience symptoms of autonomic nervous system disorders.
