Other Immunodeficiencies

Immunodeficiency is a condition in which the immune system is not functioning properly and is unable to protect the body from infections and diseases. There are various types of immunodeficiency disorders, including primary and secondary immunodeficiencies. Primary immunodeficiencies are genetic disorders that affect the immune system from birth, while secondary immunodeficiencies are acquired as a result of medical conditions or treatments.

Other immunodeficiencies are a group of rare disorders that do not fit into the category of primary or secondary immunodeficiencies. These disorders are typically characterized by a weakened immune system, making the affected individual more susceptible to infections and illnesses.

Types of Other Immunodeficiencies
  1. Wiskott-Aldrich Syndrome (WAS): WAS is a rare genetic disorder that affects the production of platelets and immune cells. Patients with WAS have a weakened immune system, making them more susceptible to infections. They also experience bleeding disorders and eczema.
  2. Ataxia-Telangiectasia (AT): AT is a genetic disorder that affects the nervous system and the immune system. Patients with AT have a weakened immune system, making them more susceptible to infections. They also experience balance and coordination problems, as well as increased risk of developing cancer.
  3. Common Variable Immunodeficiency (CVID): CVID is a disorder in which the immune system does not produce enough antibodies to fight off infections. Patients with CVID are more susceptible to infections and may experience chronic lung infections, sinusitis, and other respiratory problems.
  4. Hyper IgM Syndrome: Hyper IgM syndrome is a rare genetic disorder that affects the production of immunoglobulin (antibodies). Patients with hyper IgM syndrome have a weakened immune system and are more susceptible to infections, especially those caused by bacteria and viruses.
  5. Selective IgA Deficiency: Selective IgA deficiency is a disorder in which the body does not produce enough immunoglobulin A (IgA) antibodies. Patients with selective IgA deficiency are more susceptible to respiratory and gastrointestinal infections.
Treatment of Other Immunodeficiencies

There is no cure for other immunodeficiencies, but treatment options are available to manage symptoms and prevent infections. Treatment options may include:
