Developmental odontogenic cysts are a group of cystic lesions that originate from the odontogenic apparatus, which includes the dental tissues involved in tooth development. These cysts can occur in various locations within the oral cavity and are often discovered during routine dental examinations or radiographic investigations.

Here are a few types of developmental odontogenic cysts:

1. Dentigerous Cyst: Also known as follicular cyst, it is the most common type of developmental odontogenic cyst. It typically forms around the crown of an unerupted or partially erupted tooth.
2. Odontogenic Keratocyst: This cyst is characterized by its unique lining composed of keratinized stratified squamous epithelium. It has a tendency to grow aggressively and recur if not completely removed.
3. Lateral Periodontal Cyst: This cyst develops along the lateral surface of the root of a vital tooth and is usually discovered incidentally during radiographic examinations.

Although most developmental odontogenic cysts are asymptomatic, they can cause complications if left untreated. The cystic lesions can grow in size, causing bone expansion, displacement of adjacent teeth, or even pathological fractures in severe cases.

Diagnosing developmental odontogenic cysts involves a thorough clinical examination along with radiographic investigations. X-rays, such as panoramic radiographs or cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT), are commonly used to visualize the cystic lesions and evaluate their size and extent.

Treatment of developmental odontogenic cysts typically involves complete surgical removal of the cystic lesion and any associated tooth, if necessary. This is usually done by an oral and maxillofacial surgeon or a periodontist with expertise in cyst removal procedures.
