What is Malignant Otitis Externa?

Malignant Otitis Externa (MOE) is an infection of the ear canal, typically found in the elderly. It is caused by a bacteria, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, that travels through the ear canal and causes inflammation and tissue destruction. It is also known as necrotizing otitis externa or MOC, which stands for Malignant Otitis Externa with Complications. MOE is usually found in the left ear, although it can also be found in the right ear.

MOE can be very serious if left untreated, and can even lead to brain and bone infections. Symptoms of the infection include severe pain and itching, drainage from the ear, swelling and redness in the ear, hearing loss, and even paralysis of the facial muscles. If the infection spreads to the brain, symptoms can become even more severe.

Diagnosis of MOE is typically made with a physical examination and a swab of the ear canal to check for the presence of bacteria. Imaging tests such as a CT scan and MRI are also sometimes used to confirm the diagnosis. If MOE is suspected, treatment should begin immediately to prevent further complications.

Prevention of Malignant Otitis Externa

The best way to prevent MOE is to keep the ear dry and clean. This can be done by avoiding swimming, hair washing, and earwax removal. It is also important to practice good hygiene, such as washing hands regularly and avoiding contact with people who may have the infection. Additionally, it is important to treat any underlying medical conditions that may predispose an individual to MOE.

If an individual is already suffering from MOE, it is important to follow the doctor’s instructions for treatment. Treatment typically includes antibiotics, ear drops, and possibly surgery. In addition, the individual should practice good hygiene and avoid contact with others who may have the infection.
