ICD-10 code: S62.016B

Disease category: S62.016: Nondisplaced fracture of distal pole of navicular [scaphoid] bone of unspecified wrist

What is a Nondisplaced Fracture of the Distal Pole of Navicular Bone?

A nondisplaced fracture of the distal pole of the navicular bone in the wrist is a break in the scaphoid bone, one of the eight carpal bones in the wrist. This type of fracture is the most common of all carpal fractures. It often occurs when the hand is used to break a fall or when the wrist is bent in an awkward position.

The scaphoid bone wraps around the radius bone in the forearm and helps to form the wrist joint. It is a very important bone in the wrist because it helps to stabilize the other bones and allows for wrist movement. A fracture of the distal pole of this bone can cause pain, swelling, and decreased range of motion in the wrist.

When a nondisplaced fracture of the distal pole of the navicular bone is initially encountered, it is usually an open fracture. This means that the skin has been broken and the fracture is visible. In some cases, the fracture fragments may be visible and the bone may have shifted out of its normal position.

The diagnosis of this type of fracture is made with a physical examination and x-rays. Other imaging tests such as an MRI or CT scan may also be performed to get a better view of the fracture and the surrounding tissue.

  1. Symptoms: Pain, swelling, and decreased range of motion in the wrist
  2. Diagnosis: Physical exam and x-rays
  3. Type: Open fracture

Treatment for this type of fracture depends on the severity of the fracture and the patient's age and activity level. Surgery may be necessary to repair the fracture and stabilize the bone, or a cast or splint may be used to immobilize the wrist. Physical therapy may also be recommended to help restore range of motion and strength in the wrist.

Treatment Options for Nondisplaced Fracture of Distal Pole of Scaphoid Bone

A nondisplaced fracture of the distal pole of the scaphoid bone in the wrist is a common injury, typically caused by a fall onto an outstretched hand. The fracture is often initially treated with conservative methods, such as wearing a cast and engaging in physical therapy. In some cases, an open fracture m...
