2. Acute Disseminated Encephalomyelitis (ADEM): This rare condition typically affects children and young adults after a viral or bacterial infection. It causes inflammation and damage to the myelin sheath that surrounds nerve fibers in the brain and spinal cord. Symptoms can include fever, headache, vomiting, and neurological problems such as weakness or paralysis. Treatment typically involves high-dose corticosteroids.
3. Progressive Multifocal Leukoencephalopathy (PML): This condition is caused by the JC virus, which is usually harmless but can cause problems in people with weakened immune systems. PML damages the myelin sheath in the brain and can cause a range of symptoms including weakness, vision problems, and cognitive impairment. There is no cure for PML, but some antiviral and immunomodulatory drugs may be helpful.
4. Subacute Sclerosing Panencephalitis (SSPE): This condition is a rare complication of measles infection that typically occurs years after the initial infection. It causes progressive brain damage and can lead to seizures, dementia, and death. Treatment is supportive and there is no cure.
