Coccidioidomycosis, also known as valley fever, is a fungal infection caused by inhaling spores of the fungus Coccidioides. While most cases of coccidioidomycosis are mild and resolve on their own, some individuals may develop more severe forms of the infection. Here are some of the other forms of coccidioidomycosis:
It is important to note that not everyone who is exposed to the Coccidioides fungus will develop coccidioidomycosis, and those who do may experience varying degrees of severity. Risk factors for developing the infection include living in or traveling to areas where the fungus is endemic, such as the southwestern United States, as well as having a weakened immune system.
If you suspect that you may have coccidioidomycosis, it is important to seek medical attention promptly. Your healthcare provider can perform diagnostic tests and recommend appropriate treatment, which may include antifungal medications.
