Other viral enteritis, also known as viral non-bacterial gastroenteritis, is a type of gastroenteritis caused by a virus. It is most commonly caused by norovirus, rotavirus and astrovirus, but may also be caused by adenovirus, enterovirus and sapovirus. Viral enteritis is a common cause of diarrhea and vomiting in adults and children.
This type of gastroenteritis is highly contagious and is spread through contact with an infected person, contact with infected surfaces or eating contaminated food or water. Symptoms of other viral enteritis include watery diarrhea, nausea and vomiting, abdominal pain, fever and headache. These symptoms can last up to a week.
Diagnosis of other viral enteritis is based on medical history and a physical examination. Lab tests may be done to confirm the diagnosis. Treatment for viral enteritis is usually aimed at treating symptoms such as nausea and dehydration. Antibiotics are usually not prescribed since they do not work against viruses.
Prevention of other viral enteritis includes frequent hand washing, avoiding contact with infected people and avoiding consumption of contaminated food or water. Vaccines are available for some of the viruses that cause this type of gastroenteritis.
