ICD-10 code: B86

Disease category: B86: Scabies

Scabies is a contagious skin infestation that occurs due to an infestation of the Sarcoptes scabiei mite. The mite burrows into the top layer of the skin, causing an itchy rash and skin irritation. The infestation can spread easily from person to person through close physical contact, sharing of clothing or bedding, or through sexual contact.

Symptoms of scabies typically appear between two to six weeks after exposure to the mite. The most common symptom is intense itching, especially at night. Other symptoms may include a rash, tiny blisters or bumps on the skin, and skin that appears to have burrow tracks.

To diagnose scabies, a doctor will perform a physical exam and look for the characteristic burrow tracks on the skin. In some cases, the doctor may also take a skin scraping to examine under a microscope to look for evidence of the mite.

In addition to medication, it is important to wash all clothing, bedding, and towels in hot water and to vacuum furniture and carpets. Items that cannot be washed should be sealed in a plastic bag for at least 72 hours to kill any mites.

To prevent the spread of scabies, avoid close physical contact with anyone who has scabies or has recently been treated for the infestation. It is also important to avoid sharing clothing, bedding, or towels with others.

Overall, scabies can be an uncomfortable and inconvenient skin condition, but with prompt treatment and proper prevention measures, it can be effectively managed and eliminated.
