Tuberculosis of Other Sites

Tuberculosis, or TB, is a bacterial infection caused by the Mycobacterium tuberculosis. While most commonly found in the lungs, TB can also affect other parts of the body. This is known as extra-pulmonary TB, or tuberculosis of other sites.

Extra-pulmonary TB is most commonly found in the lymph nodes, bones, joints, genitourinary system and the central nervous system. This type of TB is typically caused by bacteria that spread from the lungs to other parts of the body. It is spread in a similar way to pulmonary TB but is far less contagious.

The symptoms of TB in other parts of the body vary depending on the affected area. In general, it is characterized by persistent fever, night sweats, weight loss, fatigue and swelling of lymph nodes. Other symptoms may include pain and stiffness in the joints, difficulty breathing, coughing up blood and difficulty urinating. In some cases, the TB can cause a severe form of meningitis, which is a life-threatening infection of the brain and spinal cord.

Diagnosing TB of other sites is similar to diagnosing pulmonary TB. The doctor will examine the patient and may order a chest X-ray, sputum sample and/or biopsy. Blood tests may also be done to check for TB antibodies. In some cases, a CT scan or MRI may be used to get a better look at the affected area.

Preventing TB of other sites is the same as preventing pulmonary TB. Vaccination with the BCG vaccine, avoiding close contact with infected individuals, and practicing good hygiene are all effective ways to reduce the risk of infection. It is also important to seek prompt medical attention if you have any of the symptoms of TB.
